Levi sitting and smiling :)

It seems hard to believe that Levi is almost 3 months old. In some ways, the time has gone slow (we are finally starting to get some sleep at night:)) and in other ways, it has flown by. Levi is getting a very fun personality. He is smiling a lot more and cooing. He can be quite the "talker". He definitely likes people to pay attention to him. He is a constant mover and it seems like he runs a marathon a day!! After seeing cousin Nathan in his Bumbo, we thought we would get ours out too. Levi really enjoyed it. He can see all around him and he really likes to be upright...that is until he's ready to move again!

Christmas 2008

It's hard to believe we had another "first" Christmas this year with Levi. We traveled up to Wisconsin to visit Dan's family the week before Christmas. We were also able to see my aunt and uncle, Dave and Donna. We planned to be up north until Tuesday but came back early due to the big snow storm. Dan had to shovel the driveway when we got home so that we could get in the house! We had a nice Christmas Eve service at our church. Isaac and Levi both did well being in the service but it definitely makes us appreciate the nursery so much more! It's hard to keep an active toddler still for an hour!! We drove down to my parents' on Christmas Day and spent a few days there. Both of my brothers and their families were able to join us on Christmas Day too, so that was special.
We bought an Advent Book this year to help Isaac learn about the birth of Jesus. He was so excited to open the pages each day. He would get sad when we told him that was all for the day! It was fun watching him anticipate what was next! He constantly asks for more. Hopefully that will continue each year!!

A Day at the Museum

We took Isaac and Levi to the Kohls Children Museum in Glenview. What a great place for kids. Isaac had so much fun exploring all the different exhibits. It's like a huge play area for the kids and they can try out everything from washing a car to grocery shopping to building to helping out on the farm. It's definitely a place we will go back to some day. Too bad it's not a little closer to home :)

Levi is 1 month

I have been meaning to get this posted for over a week now. Time has been getting away from me. I did take Levi last week to get his official 1 month pictures. He was actually very alert for them which was fun. We are getting adjusted to our new little guy. He has started smiling, which is huge, especially when you are sleep deprived. :) Levi is a little snuggler and just melts when you hold him!

Jammin' at the Mall

Dan had youth group at Gurnee Mills Mall tonight. It was called The Lighthouse. They had the band "This Beautiful Republic" come to play. There were also 2 local bands, Berea and Morning Will Break that played. It was a great night for students to invite friends. There were many individuals who shared about the love of Jesus. The music was definitely loud but the students had a lot of fun. I took Isaac and Levi over there for a little while. Levi slept through the whole thing! Isaac actually let me put ear plugs in, so hopefully that helped protect his ears!

Happy Halloween!

This is Levi's first Halloween and Isaac's first time trick-or-treating. Isaac wasn't too sure what was going on when he first started out, but he quickly caught on. By the end, he was grabbing several pieces of candy at each house (we had to put some of them back for him!). At home, Isaac kept trying to shut the door once he figured out we were giving away candy. I think he wanted to keep it all for himself! :) Funny, because he hasn't even had candy before.

Isaac's first professional haircut

We took Isaac to Sport Clips today to get his first professional haircut. Dan has trimmed Isaac's hair at home but he is finally getting enough hair to have it cut. Isaac did really well and actually sat still for the most part. He liked looking in the mirror at himself but wasn't too sure about the clippers.

Pumpkin Carving

Isaac got to carve his first pumpkin, with the "help" of his cousins. He wasn't too interested in touching the insides of the pumpkin but he definitely got a kick out of watching everyone else. He likes to go up to the pumpkin now and pull off the top.

Isaac and Levi visit the police and fire department!

We went and visited the police station and fire department after we got home from the hospital. We wanted to thank them for all of their help with Levi's delivery. Isaac had fun investigating at both places. There were lots of things for him to explore. At the police station, he made friends with one of the police officers and kept filling cups of water for him. The poor guy must have drank about 8 glasses of water while we were there!

In the News!

Levi's birth story made the newspaper. Here are the links to the two articles.

This first one is from the weekly local newspaper...

This article was on the front page of the county-wide News-Sun newspaper! Our little Levi is sure making waves in the papers! :) Enjoy the read...

It is exciting to us that through this story people have an opportunity to hear about the wonderful provision and protection of God throughout Levi's birth. And we are prayerful that both of our sons, Isaac and Levi, will give honor to God and spread his great fame throughout their lives!!!

Brothers

It's hard to believe it's already been a week since Levi was born. Isaac has been adjusting very well to his little brother. He loves to give hugs and say "baby". When he eats dinner, he likes Levi to be near him so that he can watch him. Isaac found a little duck teether that used to be his. He says it's for baby and makes sure it's always by Levi.

Introducing Levi Paul Hays...and an amazing story!!!

Hey everyone. We sure do appreciate all the prayers that many have been lifting up and for the many congratulations sent out to us. This is my first venture into the blogosphere...I thought I would fill in for Jenny here and let her rest in the room. :)

Wow, this is definitely a story to remember! I am still amazed at what all happened. I can't say that I had even the slightest thought that we were going to have a baby at our house...or in the car in the garage. But it became apparent very quickly that there was indeed no way we were going to get down the road, let alone to the hospital. The baby decided to come extremely fast (45 minutes of total labor and only 20 minutes after I arrived home from church), which was way different from the delivery with Isaac (he wasn't in a hurry at all!)

After running over to our neighbor’s to drop off Isaac so we could head to the hospital...I came back in the house and was determined to get Jenny to the hospital. I could tell this was getting urgent, but I was a determined man...my wife was getting to the hospital. Well the best I could do was get her into the front seat of our car! I didn't even get out of the driveway.

After quickly realizing this delivery was very much going to happen in our garage I called our doctor, who then had me call 911. Let me just say these 911 people are amazing and I am so thankful I had that help. Somehow in this whole mix, I guess I hung up on our doctor, though...I found that out afterward. Oops. :) I guess I was just juggling between too many phones and decisions crashing in front of me.

The 911 lady reassured me that help was on the way. She started to share what I needed to do...and I was like, hey this is not something I want to do on my own. (it was like an internal HELP!!!) My mind flashed of people I could call for help...Kathy Rowe came to mind as she is a nurse. So with 911 on one of our cell phones, I called Kathy on the other cell phone. When she answered, I quickly asked her if she was at home...which she wasn't. It was a flurry in my head...right at that point I saw an unmarked police car drive slowly past our house. I ran out to flag him down and saw one of our neighbors and had her run down the police car. It's amazing how quick he had gotten there, literally a minute or two after the 911 call. Wow, am I thankful for that!!! Come to find out, he wasn’t actually responding to the call. God definitely sent us an angel! From the time I called 911 to the time of delivery, it was only 8 minutes!!

An image that will be burned in my mind forever, is seeing this officer walk up our driveway strapping on his surgical gloves and having that look of extreme confidence (even though we found out later that he had actually never delivered a baby before). That was sure a help to me! I was just pouring sweat at that point.

So, with 911 still on the phone I was talking with them and relaying all the information they said to the police officer, who basically became our delivery doctor! I was also telling Jenny anything the 911 lady instructed me to tell her. I'll save some of the details for personal conversations, but

I'll just say that Jenny was amazing through all of this...she is definitely my hero! :) And the police officer was a gift from God to us.

Just as baby Levi was almost delivered, Cheryl Young arrived (she was coming to watch Isaac...she got more than she bargained, as she got to be a part of the final stages of the delivery!). She went to the other side of the car and helped Jenny along with the police officer.

As soon as the baby was born I could hear the sirens from the ambulances. God blessed us once again with incredible timing. The paramedics came up and took charge of the scene, cleaning the baby and suctioning his nose and mouth and doing all the things that need to happen right after delivery. They were also very helpful and gentle with Jenny.

One of our neighbor ladies was handed the baby and took him down to the ambulance with some of the paramedics. The other paramedics helped Jenny out of the car and onto a stretcher and then to the ambulance.

At this point, I was pouring sweat! It was like we were in a movie or something...and it just all seemed so surreal. But, yes, it was really happening.

The ambulance took us to Condell Hospital, as that is closest to our house. We normally would have gone to Lake Forest Hospital. Bottomline, we are grateful for God's hand throughout all this. There are many complications that can happen in childbirth...with the delivery the way it went - ie in our garage!!! - we praise HIM that everything went well....and that Jenny and baby Levi are safe and healthy.

I should mention too...do you remember that I had called Kathy Rowe on the phone??? Well, I had just set down the phone, so she had the opportunity to hear the whole delivery on the phone!!! If you want another perspective of this story, you'll have to ask her! Amazing!!!

Thank you all for your prayers, your love, and your encouragment to us as a family. we love you tons!!!

And we're proud to introduce Levi Paul Hays. 8lbs 1 oz - 19.5 inches. Born October 3, 2008 at 1:27pm. And, yes, in our garage!

Rejoicing in the LORD!

We've entered the world of minivans!!

Well, we finally did it. We bought our first minivan. It's a hard thing to swallow but it is definitely so much nicer for car seats and baby gear. From what I've heard, once you convert, you never regret it!! Here are a couple pictures of the van. Isaac really likes it too because he can actually walk around in it!!

Isaac meets his new cousin!

Isaac and I drove down to see the newest member of my brother Paul's family yesterday...Nathan Paul. He was born 2 weeks ago, on my brother John's birthday. Isaac had fun seeing everyone and playing with the cousins. He didn't seem to mind me holding Nathan for a while, but he did hit his limit and decided he wanted to be held too :) It will be fun to see how he does when his new brother arrives. We're wondering if our baby will arrive on Paul's birthday, which is this Saturday. I guess we'll find out soon enough!!
